“Chaos is another Word for Opportunity.” -I Ching Thinking, Learning & Doing in the New Normal is a free online conference that will bring together communities of color to share ideas and strategies for building a new economy & culture out of the economic collapse catalyzed by the pandemic.Conference will highlight the work of grassroots organizations in Indianapolis, feature keynote speaker Jessica Gordon-Nembhard author of Collective Courage: A History of African-American Economic Thought and Practice, and include interactive break-out sessions focused on 4 key areas.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
DR. JESSICA GORDON-NEMBHARD

Dr. Jessica Gordon-Nembhard is the author of Collective Courage: A History of African-American Economic Thought and Practice, which chronicles the long history of economic cooperation in African-American communities. Gordon Nembhard is Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development in the Department of Africana Studies at John Jay College, of the City University of New York (CUNY).

Gordon-Nembhard’s research has had formidable impact on the worker co-op sector. She also co-founded the U.S. Federation of Worker Co-ops and helped that organization build lasting ties with prominent civil rights and cooperative organizations. She is also an active member of the Grassroots Economic Organizing Newsletter collective and recently joined the board of directors of Green Worker Cooperatives.

Before the current crisis the economy did not work for our communities. This break-out session will focus on strategies for building local economies that: value people and relationships; focus on sharing & collective good; keep resources circulating in our community; and increase our community’s self-reliance and self-determination.


AFFORDABLE & ACCESSIBLE
HOUSING

Housing is an essential need and foundation for building stability and community. This break-out session will focus on strategies to leverage resources in our communities.


EMPOWERING OUR CHILDREN & YOUTH
EDUCATION

The pandemic has caused major disruption to the education system and forced many parents to educate from home. How can we transform this challenge into an opportunity to cooperate and provide inter-generational support to educate youth in our community that values & empowers them, focuses on real issues in our community and develops the leaders we need to create a better future.


VISIONS OF THE FUTURE
CREATIVITY & RESILIENCE

Artists & creatives have always been visionaries and creators of the future by impacting collective consciousness & culture. This session guided by artists will focus on how we as individuals and as a community have and continue to use our creative strengths to deal with crises. Facilitators: AshLee Baskin and Manon Voice.
