Soldiers and Sailors Monument/Monument Circle
The monument is located on Monument Circle in the center of downtown and has come to symbolize the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana.
Designed by Bruno Schmitz and constructed between 1887 and 1902, this limestone monument includes sculptures by Rudolf Schwartz (who created the figures on the structure’s sides), George Brewster (who created the figure of Victory that caps the monument, as well as two astragals) and Nicolaus Geiger (who created the Army astragal).
A statue of Civil War-era governor Oliver P. Morton, created by Franklin Simmons, preceded the monument and was incorporated into its construction. John H. Mahoney then created three other similarly scaled figures (General George Rogers Clark, Governor William Henry Harrison and Governor James Whitcomb), to reflect Indiana’s participation in earlier conflicts.
The Col. Eli Lilly Civil War Museum is housed in the lower level. Observation level is 330 steps up or take the elevator to step 290.

Indy Feminists, the Party for Socialism and Liberation – Indianapolis, Queering Indy, and Women’s March Youth Empower Indiana are standing up for choice and against anti-abortion stigma and shame!
Abortion and contraceptive access are often central themes when discussing reproductive healthcare. But there is more to the full range of reproductive care to which all people should have the right: Quality and accurate sex education; contraceptives and the morning-after pill; abortion care; elective sterilization; appropriate care during miscarriage and stillbirth; and pre- and post-natal care are all critical to full reproductive justice.
However, as feminists, our struggle isn’t only for a limited set of rights: it is a struggle against patriarchy and oppression of all kinds. When fighting for reproductive healthcare, we also fight for healthcare that benefits all people — including discrimination-free, comprehensive and safe healthcare for LGBTQ people. When talking about misogyny and attacks on women, we proudly, unabashedly, and with the utmost urgency defend our trans sisters and denounce anyone who denies their womanhood. When talking about gender equality, we recognize that gender itself is a broad and brilliant spectrum, not an “either/or” binary. And when fighting for reproductive justice, we understand that is especially a struggle for poor and working-class people and oppressed communities, such as the Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities who are particularly impacted.
We hope you’ll join us on Monument Circle, January 22nd at 11:30am to lend your voice to the struggle. End the stigma! End the shame! Abortion access is a human right! For a world free of misogyny and patriarchy! WEAR RED! We will bring the signs, music, and pro-choice chants!

Women brought our #PowerToThePolls this November and elected a record number of women and the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history. But we know there is more to be done — especially here in Indiana. We must demand concrete policy changes that reflect the values we first marched for two years ago. The #WomensWave will carry us into 2019 and beyond, as we build the world we want to live in. Join us!

Animal lovers of Indiana UNITE for this special event to celebrate kindness toward animals. Bring your friends and family to be part of the largest gathering of animal lovers in our state’s history!
Sadly, more animals are unnecessarily harmed in Indiana than almost any other state. From puppy mills, corporate farming and hunting/trapping/fur, to the extensive use of animals for laboratory research. But underneath it all, voices of kindness are growing in number and volume. This march/rally is an opportunity for us to come together and make a statement that animals should never be harmed for human purposes.
Robert Grillo – Founder and Director – Free From Harm
Michael Budkie – Executive Director – Stop Animal Exploitation Now
Carrie LeBlanc, M.A. – Executive Director – CompassionWorks International
Michelle and Mark Pruitt – Founders – Upland’s PEAK Sanctuary
Kate and Andrew Yundt – Co-founders – Kanda Farm Sanctuary
Kristina J. Addington – Owner – V-Grits Food Co. Louisville, KY
We will be announcing more speakers and events for the day in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
