Phoenix Theatre Indianapolis

Phoenix Theatre Indianapolis 705 N Illinois St. Indianapolis, Indiana 46204

Phoenix Theatre is a 35-year-old professional, not-for-profit theatre company with a focus on new, contemporary theatre. We had the hipster mentality before it was cool…though we never embraced skinny jeans. We don’t produce shows that have already been done in Indianapolis—we’re always different, always unique.

Since we have two spaces—the 144-seat Livia & Steve Russell Stage and the 90-seat Frank & Katrina Basile Stage—we’re able to produce year-round. That means there’s almost always something on our stage for you to enjoy!

The material that we choose is personal and intimate, just like our spaces. And we carefully select our season with our stages in mind. Whether you’re in the flexible Basile stage or the more traditional, proscenium style Russell stage, we always present the highest quality in professional, contemporary theatre, providing you more intimacy than a film close-up ever could. With the first production in our beautiful new Cultural Centre, we’ve surpassed the 400 mark in our production history, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what the next 400 productions hold.

We’ve produced several award winners, including 38 Tony-Award Winners, 74 Drama Desk Award-Winners, 14 Pulitzer Prize-Winners, and many others.
All of our productions are either Regional or Indiana Premieres, including several straight from Broadway. 91 of our productions have been World Premieres.

We’re a member of the Actors’ Equity Union, and employ over 100 professional artists every season. Better yet, 99% of our artists are based locally.

We’re a charter member of the National New Play Network (NNPN), the country’s alliance of non-profit professional theatres that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays.
We were a cornerstone of Mass Ave. businesses, spending most of our history in the Old Church, as it is lovingly known, from 1988-2018.

Now, we’re a cornerstone of the Cultural Corridor in the heart of downtown Indianapolis in our remarkable new facility.

Join us for this important and enlightening community discussion to learn how women are making such significant inroads in politics and what the future holds. The event is free to the public and features a panel discussion with an inviting mix of women who are both seasoned and newcomers, Democrats and Republicans.

STANDING ROOM ONLY reservations remain for this free, public forum at bit.ly/WomenInPolitics2020 (SRO names will go on a wait list for any available seats in order of reservation).

Moderating the panel is Lesley Weidenbener, Managing Editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal. She will lead the discussion with several of Indiana’s most influential women in politics including:

Ali Brown was sworn in on January 1, 2020 as the new Indianapolis City-County Council District 5 Councillor. The small business owner and former nonprofit executive is the first openly LGBTQ woman elected to the council.

Anne Hathaway is the President and CEO of the grassroots public-affairs consulting firm, Hathaway Strategies. She was a member of the George H.W. Bush White House, the U.S. Treasury Department and currently serves as Indiana’s National Committeewoman on the Republican National Committee. She is Executive Director of the Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.

Angela Smith Jones is the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development at the City of Indianapolis. In this role, she oversees Develop Indy, the city’s economic development organization and Employ Indy, the city’s workforce improvement board.

Teresa Lubbers was appointed in 2009 as Commissioner for Indiana’s Commission for Higher Education. Previously, she served 17 years as a Republican member of the Indiana Senate, representing the 30th District including parts of Marion and Hamilton Counties. She is the co-founder of the Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.

Robin Shackleford was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2012 representing District 98 in Indianapolis. She is the ranking minority member of the Public Health Committee and current chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus.

We hope you’ll join us on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre located at 705 North Illinois Street. Parking is available in our free lot northwest of the theatre, as well as metered street parking.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Meet representatives from local women’s organizations and stroll through the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis student art exhibit in our Gallery Phoenix. Beer, wine and sodas will be available for purchase.
