Few things are as elevating to the spirit as swing dancing. It’s near impossible to ignore the rhythms, melodies, personalities of the music. It makes you smile; calls you onto the dance floor. Swing dancing is one of the crowning achievements of Humanity.

Norma Miller, the Queen of Swing (1919-2019), said, “Swing was the greatest movement in this country, and it still is! … As Duke Ellington said, “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing. And it ain’t changed.”

We agree. Hope to see you at the dance!

Zoofunkyou will be making their Muncie debut, fresh off the release of their new album, Wild Gumption.

Chicago’s best kept secret is Zoofunkyou, a modern day blues-infused psychedelic soulfunk phenomenon who have brought their quick-witted sonic expressionism and meaningful melodic lyrics to audiences all around the country. Their stew of finely crafted musical elements is a recipe that they’ve been brewing since 2013 with different ingredients and instrumentalists interspersed along the way. In the current iteration, founder Derek Dare (Guitar & Vocals) leads a quartet of fearless improvisers, Matthew Coglianese (Bass & Vocals), Jake Hennessy (Drums) and Bryan Scheinkopf (Guitar & Vocals), oftentimes surrounded by a horn section known only as ‘The Psychedelic TootBois’. The band hit the road for the first time in 2018 and has since developed a national presence, leading them to performances on both coasts and two sets at Summer Camp Music Festival in 2019. The year culminated in the release of their first Double LP as Zoofunkyou, “Wild Gumption”, which is now available on all streaming services. The album had been in production since 2017 and was produced by the band & fellow Chicago native, Packy Lundholm who worked tirelessly to capture some of the magic of a live Zoofunkyou concert in the studio. With a wide repertoire of both gripping original music and tasteful cover selections, the band consistently creates musical moments in their live shows that tickle the soul, melt the face, and shake the booties of their vibrant and ever-growing fan base, the Zoofü crew.

This week at Indy Contra we will have Troika playing with open calling!

From a simple folk song to a snappy gypsy jazz tune to a wandering improvisational reverie, Troika brings the rich and diverse landscape of International folk music to life for American audiences. Although many instruments are featured–the heart of Troika’s sound is the dynamic interplay between Sarah Skreko’s fiddle and Dianna Davis’ clarinet, driven forward by the punchy rhythms of Mario Joven’s guitar and Adam Riviere’s percussion. Troika also celebrates the Balkan dance tradition; the wild rhythms of their dance tunes are unlike anything else this side of the Carpathians!

Calling will be open calling this week. Every third Tuesday we will have open calling for all of our callers, new and experienced. We want to continuously grow our calling scene, so we can brag about having an amazing line up of callers.

Directions to the dance hall can be found here: https://www.indycontra.org/location/directionstoriolo/

Hope to see you there!

$9 (non members) $7 (members) $5 (youth)
bring a water bottle – free parking
Beginner lesson at 7:45pm
Music starts at 8pm
www.indycontra.org

There’s no smoking or drinking, and anyone’s welcome to dance together, regardless of age, experience, gender, preference for dogs or cats, etc.

Parking: See https://www.indycontra.org/location/directionstoriolo/

Contra dancing is a social dance. Contra is pure fun and not for competition or performance. It requires no experience and focuses on community, making friends and dancing to a variety of music. You don’t need to bring a partner – part of the tradition is switching partners each time. A caller teaches each dance, so no lessons are needed; just show up and have fun!

Described as a mashup of the sensibilities of Ben Folds and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Sammy Miller and The Congregation are on a mission, crisscrossing the country like a vaudevillian revival show with evangelic fervor for music. The seven-piece band is pulling people out of their solitary lives and putting them in the moment with a bracing dose of joyful jazz performed with infectious theatricality. The New York City-based, familial collective has captured its frenetic energy and unflinchingly optimistic songwriting on its debut album, Leaving Egypt.

“We want to get people back in a room together,” Sammy Miller says. “I love the idea of being unhinged, sincere, vulnerable, and breaking down walls through humor. Music is an uplifting gift, and I want to be generous in sharing it with people.”

Sammy Miller and The Congregation has been described as a mashup of the sensibilities of Ben Folds and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The band freely mixes vocal and instrumental tracks live and on record, asking the audience to go along for the ride with the lead melody being carried by vocalists half the time, and instruments the other half.

Sat, Jan 18, 2020 7:00 PM - Sat, Jan 18, 2020 11:00 PM @ The Jazz Kitchen

Chicago-born Duke Tumatoe is a musician/showman who has retained a firm career by fusing gritty R&B, rock, blues, and funk injected with equal parts humor and gut-level sincerity.

Tumatoe was a founding member of what would become REO Speedwagon. His tenure with that band was short-lived, leaving in 1969 and forming Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless collegecampuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release two albums, Red Pepper Hot! (1976) and Back to Chicago (1982).

In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs. He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio, who recorded Duke’s Up for Blind Pig Records. Tumatoe took advantage of the more flexible schedule and formed his own record label, Sweetfinger Music. Over the next several years,Tumatoe released four discs on his label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997).

Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe’s performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job! on Warner Bros. In 1999, Tumatoe signed with the J-Bird label, which released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It’s Christmas (Let’s Have Sex). Duke Tumatoe & the Power Trio appeared from Sweetfinger Records in 2003, followed by 2006’s You’ve Got the Problem! on Blind Pig Records.
