The Indiana Heritage Fellowships Awards Celebration

Sat, Apr 27, 2019 1:00 PM - Sat, Apr 27, 2019 4:30 PM @ Traditional Arts Indiana

Join us for the presentation and celebration of the inaugural Indiana Heritage Fellowships!

Debra Bolaños, a ballet folklórico dancer and instructor in East Chicago, Indiana, and Harold Klosterkemper, a fiddle player from Decatur County, Indiana, will be honored for their lifetime achievement as artists whose work is rooted in community life in Indiana.

Recipients of the 2018 TAI apprenticeship program will also be recognized for their work.

On Saturday, April 27, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., demonstrations and performances by traditional artists from throughout Indiana will fill the Mathers Museum’s halls. Celebration highlights will include performances by Xel-Ha Escuela de Danza of East Chicago, Indiana, and bluegrass music performers Olivia Smiley and Eric Lowry. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, Miami and Great Lakes beadwork embroidery, Zapotec weaving, hoopnet making, and African drum making.

The awards ceremony will be from 2:30 to 4:00p.m.

“Harold Klosterkemper has inspired generations of Indiana fiddlers. For decades he has been a regular at area fiddle contests and gatherings,” notes Jon Kay, Director of TAI. “You can often find him playing with and encouraging musicians a fraction of his age.” Kay added that TAI looks for artists whose art connects them to a community. “After years of excelling as a traditional dancer, first in Indiana and later in Mexico, Debra Bolaños became a ballet folklórico teacher in East Chicago, and has taught hundreds of students in Northern Indiana traditional, regional dances from throughout Mexico.”

This event will be free and open to the public!

Pull another year from the calendar to commune with that sacred holiday: Record Store Day. Traverse the grooves etched as valleys in vinyl, to welcome the arrival of sound as it emanates as vibrating air molecules to land in your consciousness.

Commune with the ancient wisdom becoming new again through Clint Breeze and The Groove, sure to paint portraits of soul before their new EP, “Arrival” descends.

Healer: TribeSouL/ Joshua Powell/ Veseria/ The Outside Voices

Sat, Apr 06, 2019 8:00 PM - Sat, Apr 06, 2019 11:00 PM @ Healer

TribeSouL (Indy) – soulful intersection hip hop, reggae, entrancing spoken word capitulated fiercely from the sacred heart of spirited unity with more girl power than a roller derby.

Joshua Powell & the Great Train Robbery (Indy) – in their first full band home show since PSYCHO/TROPIC’s release, experience rock n roll’s soft ego death making your insides tingle while channeling the ecstatic fervor of a million babies born at once.

Veseria (Indy) – fresh off the release of PPD1, become cosmically refreshed by the spectral embodiments of human sweetness, silhouetted by a host of matching suns that proclaim the glory of thrashed vocal cords and guitar solos from cthulu’s drooling mouth.

The Outside Voices (Kent, OH) – coal-fired blue collar smash the tubes out of yr amp type sweaty boys with rusty belts and more than thing or two to holler at the moon about.

ALL AGES.

time + cover TBA.
Just put this shit on your G-cal is what I’m sayin’.

Princess-Out There

Fri, Apr 05, 2019 6:00 PM - Fri, Apr 05, 2019 10:00 PM @ Listen Hear

Join us for the Indiana premiere of “Out There,” a concept video album and live performance by the band Princess that explores the roles men play and those they ought to be playing during the current cultural reckoning with misogyny.

The video’s science fiction narrative explores the power of the Divine Feminine through collaborations with musician JD Samson, visual artist Jennifer Meridian, and the band TEEN.

Princess is a performance art duo, a collaboration between Alexis Gideon and Michael O’Neill that uses music as the backbone of a multidisciplinary practice that explores issues of queerness and the concept of masculinity. Princess was formed in 2004 in the Chicago DIY Performance space, Texas Ballroom. The duo released a self-titled LP and performed until 2006 when they went on to pursue other paths, reuniting for this project in 2017.

Alexis Gideon has performed and exhibited throughout the world, including at Moderna Museet Stokholm, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Vdrome, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Wexner Center for the Arts, and Time Zones Festival Italia. He has toured internationally and opened for Dan Deacon and tUnE-yArDs.

Michael O’Neill has collaborated with JD Samson of Le Tigre and, with her, formed the acclaimed art/performance band MEN. MEN toured extensively around the world including festival appearances at Coachella (USA) and Sidney Mardi Gras (AUS), at museums such as SF MoMA (USA) and Museo Rufino Tamayo (MX), and support tours with the Gossip and Peaches.

FREE, open to public

Zachary DePue and Joana Genova, violins; Michael Isaac Strauss, viola; Austin Huntington, cello; with guest pianist Soyeon Kate Lee

The Indianapolis Quartet completes its third season in residence at the University of Indianapolis with music of Joseph Haydn, César Franck, and Edvard Grieg. The Quartet welcomes acclaimed guest pianist Soyeon Kate Lee for a performance of Franck’s explosive 1879 masterpiece, the Quintet for piano and strings in F minor. The program opens with Haydn’s witty “Joke” Quartet, Op. 33, No. 2, and concludes with the soaring intensity of Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27.

Guest artist Soyeon Kate Lee has been hailed by the New York Times as a pianist with “a huge, richly varied sound, a lively imagination, and a firm sense of style.” Winner of the 2010 Naumburg International Competition and the 2004 Concert Artist Guild Competition, she has appeared as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and San Diego Symphony, among others. Recent solo recitals have taken her to Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival.

Half Gringa
https://halfgringa.bandcamp.com/
An emotional scab-picker, Half Gringa‘s work explores the confluence of Latinx and Midwestern identity. Her first LP, Gruñona, reveals a palimpsest of wounds upon scars. Contemplative and choleric, all manner of memorials to the past are revealed—mountains, dive bars, orchards, trains, expressways, tiny kitchens, Chicago, Caracas, and outer space. With a full band, Half Gringa coaxes confession after confession out of Olive’s insistent guitar and undaunted vocals; Andres Fonseca’s tender bass lines; Sam Cantor’s impish, mesmerizing guitar, Nathan Bojko’s meticulous drumming, Lucy Little’s enkindled violin, and crowned by Ivan Pyzow’s trumpet swagger.

Sarah Grain & the Billions of Stars
https://www.sarahgrain.com/
Listening to Sarah Grain & the Billions of Stars, you may pick up hints of folk, bossa nova, rock, americana or jazz. Their sound is finely textured with thoughtful instrumentation, rich vocal layering and harmonies, and is rooted by Grain’s well-crafted lyrics and storytelling. Grasping you, these songs will get into your head and have you singing to yourself the next day. And each live experience is different; the band effortlessly adapts from full electric sound to small acoustic duo, giving listeners the chance to hear the songs they love in any setting.
