Audiodacity with The Labra Brothers

Saturday, May 15th

Anything is possible! This is the mission statement of the multi-genre sextet, and it is embedded in the heart of every song they write. From their humble beginnings as an open mic house cover band, Audiodacity has grown into a dynamic and musically-diverse ensemble with dozens of original songs, each imbued with the spirit of their camaraderie. Every member has varying levels of musical backgrounds, preferences, and influences; but these differences seamlessly combine into a sound that is truly original. Funk, rock, hip-hop, latin, jazz, reggae, R&B, blues and even dubstep – no genre is left unexplored.
Audiodacity’s unique style and their reputation for delivering unforgettable live performances have earned them a spot among Indiana’s top bands. They have won several city-wide and state-wide battle of the bands competitions, performed all throughout the Midwest, and have even shared the stage with nationally touring acts such as Ludacris, GROUPLOVE, and Here Come The Mummies.

Wed, Mar 17, 2021 6:00 PM - Wed, Mar 17, 2021 8:00 PM @ The Jazz Kitchen

Every track on her self-titled debut, is steeped in the love and the passion she has for the genre. It’s almost a religious reverence, which makes perfect sense considering she’s a preacher’s daughter who grew up singing gospel in church. “Gospel and blues have always been so closely related,” she opines. “It’s like there’s a fork in the musical road, one way it’s gospel and the other is the blues. I was exposed to Koko Taylor when I was eight years old, and right then I knew which road I was going to take.” But her precision is by no means cut and dried or predictable; she is methodical, if not hypnotic, weaving a spell across seven songs that reflect the multi- decade journey it’s taken for her to get here as much as the destination itself. From the way the very first notes drop you right into the delta, through excursions that go from back country to steamy, inner-city grooves and all the way through to New Orleans-inspired horns that wind the album down, she is in firm command of every aspect of the songwriting process. “Everything took a big turn when I stopped writing on guitar and started singing the melodies in my head,” she relates, ” even the guitar riffs and the solos. Then Paul (longtime collaborator, guitarist/singer Paul Holdman) translates it all and embellishes it with his own nuances—when we put it together like that, the magic happens.” It is magic, but it’s no illusion. Rebekah Meldrum is a master magician who’s just beginning to reveal her bag of tricks.

Tue, Mar 16, 2021 7:30 PM - Tue, Mar 16, 2021 9:00 PM @ https://butlerartscenter.org/performance/duckwall-artist-series-trina-gross-clarinet/

At the start of this pandemic when all things shut down including musical concerts, the Musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra began creating music and sharing their talents through videos online. Clarinetist Trina Gross asked four friends from the orchestra to play a short sampling of the Larghetto from the Mozart Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet for a multitrack video that was brilliantly made by violinist Jennifer Farquhar. She named us “QuaranTrina.” As the warmer months allowed, we planned concerts and performed in many neighborhoods bringing live music to friends and neighbors.

We come together once again to play wonderful quintets for clarinet and string quartet by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Johannes Brahms and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart featuring Butler faculty clarinetist Trina Gross with special guests, Jennifer Farquhar and Lisa Scott, violins; Amy Kniffen, viola; and Perry Scott, cello.

The program features the Art Song literature of four women composers from the Baroque era through the 20th Century. Dr. Zenobi and Butler University School of Music Master’s student Austin Sandoval begin the program by presenting songs of love and betrayal by Venitian composer Barbara Strozzi (1619-77). This set includes one of Strozzi’s best known works, the secular lament “Lagrime mie.” In the second set, Dr. Zenobi and pianist Li-Wen Weng share their interpretation of poems on themes of love and romance composed for a salon setting by French composer and virtuoso pianist Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944). Next, pianist Catherine Bringerud joins Dr. Zenobi to perform selections by the sister composers Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) and Lili Boulanger (1893-1918). The program ends with recently rediscovered pieces by American pianist, educator and composer Margaret A. Bonds (1913-72). We are grateful to Dr. John Michael Cooper of Southwestern University for permission to perform his as-of-yet unpublished editions of Bonds’ Robert Frost poem settings. In between each set, Dr. Zenobi will present program notes in video form to provide translations of the poems, share biographical information about these composers, and focus listeners’ ears on important elements of musical style.
