Described as a mashup of the sensibilities of Ben Folds and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Sammy Miller and The Congregation are on a mission, crisscrossing the country like a vaudevillian revival show with evangelic fervor for music. The seven-piece band is pulling people out of their solitary lives and putting them in the moment with a bracing dose of joyful jazz performed with infectious theatricality. The New York City-based, familial collective has captured its frenetic energy and unflinchingly optimistic songwriting on its debut album, Leaving Egypt.

“We want to get people back in a room together,” Sammy Miller says. “I love the idea of being unhinged, sincere, vulnerable, and breaking down walls through humor. Music is an uplifting gift, and I want to be generous in sharing it with people.”

Sammy Miller and The Congregation has been described as a mashup of the sensibilities of Ben Folds and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The band freely mixes vocal and instrumental tracks live and on record, asking the audience to go along for the ride with the lead melody being carried by vocalists half the time, and instruments the other half.

Chicago-born Duke Tumatoe is a musician/showman who has retained a firm career by fusing gritty R&B, rock, blues, and funk injected with equal parts humor and gut-level sincerity.

Tumatoe was a founding member of what would become REO Speedwagon. His tenure with that band was short-lived, leaving in 1969 and forming Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless collegecampuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release two albums, Red Pepper Hot! (1976) and Back to Chicago (1982).

In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs. He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio, who recorded Duke’s Up for Blind Pig Records. Tumatoe took advantage of the more flexible schedule and formed his own record label, Sweetfinger Music. Over the next several years,Tumatoe released four discs on his label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997).

Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe’s performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job! on Warner Bros. In 1999, Tumatoe signed with the J-Bird label, which released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It’s Christmas (Let’s Have Sex). Duke Tumatoe & the Power Trio appeared from Sweetfinger Records in 2003, followed by 2006’s You’ve Got the Problem! on Blind Pig Records.

OCCIDENTAL GYPSY is returning to The Jazz Kitchen!

Internationally acclaimed quintet Occidental Gypsy plays an exhilarating blend of gypsy, jazz and folk music that enraptures the listener with a complex acoustic sound, burnished by smooth vocals reminiscent of the first era of swing. Their pioneering approach to Gypsy music pays homage to Django Reinhardt and expands the genre to include elements of western (Occidental) sounds and rhythms, including blues, Klezmer and Latin.

Their original songs are deeply complex and challenging to execute, and are often considered a “natural evolution” of Reinhardt’s sounds were he still alive today. Their energetic shows have garnered them fans among the most discerning musicians, and new gypsy lovers alike.

Occidental Gypsy will perform new original pieces and classic covers from their latest CD “44070,” including two historically-based human rights songs, which feel relevant today.

REVIEWS:

“Occidental Gypsy has great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, and high energy originals that leave the crowd crazy.
An awesome band.” -DAVID BROMBERG

“They perform with enormous heart and soul and have an original groove that is definitely worth checking out.” – CR LONNIE SMITH

Don Heckman of the LA TIMES says “…irresistible, a virtual definition of an era when jazz was often described as “hot” music. Occidental Gypsy’s rhythm section, usually driven by the surging rhythm guitar of Brett Feldman, hit one irresistible rhythmic groove after another, “hot” was the best applicable adjective.”

CHICAGO TRIBUNE says “… sonic pleasures to be had, particularly in an energetic, gypsy-jazz transformation of Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” which opened the evening. More than once, vocalist-guitarist Frantz brought the large crowd to near silence through the warmth and openness of his singing, as in “Georgia on My Mind.”

HARTFORD COURANT says “As it journeys from venue to venue throughout the United States, Occidental Gypsy, a red-hot, Django Reinhardt-inspired, gypsy swing and fusion band, loves to encourage rapt listeners to get up on their feet and dance to its classically retro yet forever young sounds.”

Fri
Fri, Nov 01, 2019 6:00 PM - Fri, Nov 01, 2019 9:00 PM @ Harrison Center

Friday, November 1 brings the opening night of the 24th annual Spirit & Place Festival, R/Evolution and “Folly,” new work by Kyle Ragsdale Art to the Harrison Center. This year’s Spirit & Place Festival explores both revolutionary and evolutionary change through a variety of topics, event formats, and creative expressions all aimed at helping us build stronger connections to one another and to this place we call home.

Ragsdale’s new body of work was inspired by Electra Havermeyer Webb, who founded the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. Ragsdale explains, “She collected all sorts of strange and unusual folk art and buildings–even a steamboat that is in the middle of a field, but it was an extravagant, beautiful expression of her love for that stuff. In a lot of these works there is a sense of wonder and magic and beauty for no reason or just for its own sake. It leans into the way I like to furl fabric, decorate too much . . . I have a tendency to over-flourish. These paintings feel mysterious and precarious. The bulk of the work was made in Vermont where I was a resident for the month of August. The show also includes very large landscape paintings from Vermont. These large landscapes follow the theme of folly because not everyone wants a 10′ x 7’ landscape painting or has a space that could even accommodate it.”

The Speck Gallery features photographic work of Mike Allee in “Masks of Iberica and other photos.” Allee shot much of the work while attending the Iberian Mask Festival in Lisbon. “The masks are based on pagan ritual and superstition going back as far as the 13th century. Many of the characters were once thought to scare off evil spirits, to bless the harvests or to promote fertility. Animals and nature are frequently used in the costuming; the devil is often a theme. Some masks are extremely elaborate; some are incredibly crude – constructed of painted tree bark, feathers, animal hides, and whatever materials may be available.”

The City Gallery exhibits work inspired by the annual event, PreEnactIndy, which takes place every October in the Monon 16 area. Partnering with local theatre groups, the interactive event imagines the neighborhood as it ought to be–just equitable and economically vibrant. Artists featured include Kyle Ragsdale, Reggie Strong, Johnny McKee, Courtland Blade and more.

Hank & Dolly’s Gallery features “Untitled,” an exploration of rhythm and repetition by Luke Crawley. “This body of work is an attempt by the artist to find a voice, a style, and is, at its very heart, an experiment.”

Continuing in the Underground, “Ballyhoo: A Multimedia Art Extravaganza.” Ballyhoo is a group art exhibition highlighting all aspects of the bygone era of the circus and its performers. Included in the exhibition will be a selection of rare, original sideshow banners from the collection of Dr. Chris Jones. A special screening of the 1932 film “Freaks” will be shown the night of the opening courtesy of Walter Paisley Movie House.

Mark O’Connor’s Indy Jazz Band joins Naptown Stomp for swing dancing in the gym.

The work hangs through November 29.

With support from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis, Indiana Arts Commission, Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, Allen Whitehill Clowes Foundation, the Indianapolis Foundation, Sun King Brewery, and Matinee Creative.
