Indianapolis City Market and Indiana Landmarks stage tours of an unusual site usually hidden from public view. Our guided tour of the Catacombs shows you a Roman-looking expanse of brick arches beneath the outdoor Whistler Plaza of City Market.

The Catacombs qualify as both a ruin and a redevelopment opportunity. They’re what remains of Tomlinson Hall, an imposing building whose main hall seated 3,500 people. Dietrich Bohlen designed the hall in 1886 to complement his earlier work at City Market. He also designed Indiana Landmarks’ Morris-Butler House. Tomlinson burned in January 1958, turning Market Street into an icy lake as firefighters battled the blaze. The city took down the remains later that year but left the vast basement of brick arches intact. Our Catacombs don’t have bones or crypts, but feature scores of brick barrel-vaulted arches from Tomlinson Hall.

Tours last approximately 30 minutes and depart from Whistler Plaza, the west plaza of City Market, 222 E. Market Street, Indianapolis. The tour check-in may be relocated inside the West Wing, depending on the weather.

With its close proximity to the Cultural Trail, Bike Hub, and the Downtown Transit Center, Market East District is a hub for Indianapolis transit. But what do we miss when we’re just passing through? Join us for a themed walk led by historic preservationist Connie Zeigler of C. Resources as we explore Market East architecture – both old and new.

Free and open to the public // All ages
MEET on the East Plaza of City Market. We don’t walk if the weather is terrible. Walks are free but bring some money if you’d like to stop for a snack or drink in the middle.

Brought to you by Spark Placemaking and Indianapolis City Market with support from Southwest Airlines and Project for Public Spaces through the Heart of the Community program.

The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and departs from Whistler Plaza, the west plaza of City Market, 222 E. Market Street, Indianapolis. In the event of bad weather, look for the check-in table inside the West Wing rather than on the plaza.

Photography is allowed.

Please note: City Market Catacombs are an undeveloped historic asset and are not accessible for all guests. The Catacombs feature a very rough, uneven dirt floor. Entering and exiting the tour is only possible via a flight of stairs (with hand rails). The tour is not navigable for guests with walkers, canes, strollers, or wheelchairs. We recommend closed-toed shoes. Alert to people with breathing sensitivities: the Catacombs are a musty, sometimes damp area. Guests are required to sign a waiver of liability to take the Catacombs tour.

**Indiana Landmarks revitalizes communities, reconnects us to our heritage, and saves meaningful places. With nine offices located throughout the state, we help people rescue endangered landmarks and restore historic neighborhoods and downtowns. Our members receive discounts on events and our bimonthly magazine, Indiana Preservation. For more information, visit www.indianalandmarks.org.**

Believe it or not, Indy is full of oddities. Explore what’s weird with artist Kipp Normand on this themed walk.

About Normand
Normand is a scavenger and an obsessive collector, searching streets and alleys, junk stores and abandoned buildings looking for clues to explain the mystery of our world. He finds stories in discarded things: stories about himself and stories about all of us; our cities and our shared history. He first began making assemblage, shadow boxes and collage images as a way to justify his relentless collecting. They soon became much more. They are Normand’s way to dig deep into the vast museum of this world and share his finds with anyone who cares to look. He works out of his studio at The Harrison Center for the Arts.

Save the date! The next bikeparty is quickly approaching! We are throwing another dodgeball bikeparty, so you don’t want to miss this one! We’ve scouted a couple of spots around the city to get in a few dodgeball games. It’s gonna be fun!

New to bikeparty? We ride a different route (usually with a theme) the second Friday of every month. We meet at the East Plaza of Indianapolis City Market around 7pm and rollout by 7:30 pm. Rides are usually 8-12 miles in length at a pace of about 10 mph or something super slow. This is a social ride! We obey traffic laws. Lights and party attitude (but responsible riding) required; helmets and costumes strongly encouraged. Ride at your own risk; you are responsible for yourself yo!

See you Friday, June 8th!!
