The Garfield Park Arts Center, part of Indy Parks & Recreation, engages visitors in diverse, artistic and cultural exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. It features performing arts spaces, visual arts galleries, classrooms, and a literary arts library.

Mission:

The Garfield Park Arts Center strives to inspire and build a community of arts learners, leaders, and organizations.

Indy Parks Mission:

We connect communities by providing places and experiences that inspire healthy living, social engagement, and a love of nature.

History:

The GPAC was originally called the Community House and was built in 1922. It was designed to look like a picnic shelter with enclosed walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces at each end. In 1930 a large swimming pool was located in the area that is currently the GPAC parking lot.

At that time, the Community House was used as a locker room and recreation center. In 1990 the pool was removed and replaced by the Aquatic Center that is now located at the Burrello Family Center.

In 2006 the Community House was remodeled and enlarged using a $2.7 million grant to become the Garfield Park Arts Center. The 8,000 square foot facility now houses a multi-use performing arts space, an exhibition hall, visual and production arts classrooms, recording studio, a literary arts library, and a rehearsal room.

Speakers will address the theory, practice and effects of boycott across several spheres — economic, cultural, political — and assess how boycotts promote or slow political revolution and evolution, and how they affect personal evolution. We will explore how boycotts succeed, even when there is no economic impact. Corporations and countries are deeply embedded in their communities, and profoundly dependent upon the good will of their employees, shareholders and citizens. When they are on the receiving end of appropriate moral judgment, boycott targets can evolve — as can people who choose to boycott by exercising their economic and moral autonomy.

There will also be a traveling exhibition, “Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism,” which features posters from more than 20 boycotts, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott; United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycott; divestment from South Africa; the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS); and many others.

Panelists include:
Imhotep Adisa is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Kheprw Institute, a non-profit organization focused on youth development in Indianapolis.

Huwaida Arraf is a Palestinian-American activist, lawyer and co-founder, in 2001, of the Palestinian-led International Solidarity Movement (ISM), which focuses on nonviolent community organizing to resist the Israeli occupation.

Stephanie Skora is a femme lesbian, trans woman, and working-class anti-Zionist Ashkenazi Jew whose activist work centers around Palestinian solidarity organizing, queering Jewish spaces, and fighting for justice and liberation for all trans people.

Dalit Baum is the Director of Economic Activism for AFSC. She is also the cofounder of Who Profits from the Occupation & Coalition of Women for Peace.
moderated by: Mark Sniderman
